We invite you to join us this spring, Saturday, April 10, 2027, at the Reconnect Mathematics Project Teaching and Learning Workshop at Kellogg Community College. While all STEM instructors are welcomed, the workshop is particularly relevant to high school mathematics teachers and mathematics educators who work in the first two years of college or adult education.
Registration is free but space is limited. Registration ends March 1, 2027.
Date: Saturday, April 10, 2027
Time: 8 am - 4:30 pm
Location: Kellogg Community College North Avenue Campus (450 North Ave, Battle Creek, MI, 49017)
Facilitators: Dr. April Ström and Dr. Scott Adamson
SCECH Credits Available: Participants will have the opportunity to earn State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs). Additional information about eligibility and credit requirements will be provided to registered attendees.
The workshop will focus on teaching and learning approaches that are underscored by the following guiding principles**:
Students’ deep engagement in mathematical thinking;
Instructors’ interest in and use of student thinking;
Student-to-student interaction; and
Instructors’ attention to equitable and inclusive practices.
As such, the workshop will involve:
Experiencing evidence-based teaching practices from a student perspective;
Briefly reflecting on lesson design and implementation with a focus on rich mathematical tasks;
Facilitating these tasks using meaningful mathematics discourse, paying particular attention to communication (teacher-to-student and student-to-student) as well as how to critique the reasoning of students; and
Exploring meaningful ways to support all students with diverse backgrounds and mathematical preparation through equitable and inclusive teaching practices.
Overall, the training is informed by the works of:
The 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions by Smith and Stein,
OPAL: Observation Protocol for Active Learning by April Ström and Scott Adamson, and
Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Liljedahl
