Active Learning Summer Workshop
The Active Learning Summer Workshop was held on June 11-14 at Kellogg Community College. The workshop provided at least 18 hrs. of intensive instructional training centered on the following principles of active learning:
Students’ deep engagement in mathematical thinking
Instructors’ interest in and use of student thinking
Student-to-student interaction
Instructors’ attention to equitable and inclusive practices.
The training was well-received.
This was the most impactful workshop I've attended this year. It provided practical, research-based strategies to increase student active engagement to improve learning. As I continue to reflect, I feel more equipped to think about how I will redesign parts of my instruction to foster more collaboration, inquiry, and hands-on activities through more real-world applications, making our class lessons more
dynamic and meaningful.
The workshop was transformative. I am excited to incorporate active learning in all of
my classes when I can.
It is hard to put into words how impacted I feel by the workshop. It challenged
everything that I do - reasserted my belief that we can do better as educators and
gave me a lot of ideas and inspiration on how this can be done.
The workshop left me reflecting on applications for my classroom and gave me the
confidence to apply them in the fall. Your passion for teaching craft and student
success were motivating and contagious.
Great conference! Thank you so much!
Self-Efficacy Survey Instrument
In spring 2025 we also developed and piloted an online survey instrument (RMPSI) to access instructor self-efficacy level for active learning and its implementation in mathematics courses. Further tests for reliablity and validity are forthcoming.
